Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Buy the 'Gondola + 5 Luge Ride' bundle online ($59 adult, $39 child) — it's the best value and kids will want more than 3 runs, trust me.

2

Go up around 3 PM. Ride the luge 3 times, have an early dinner (5 PM), then catch sunset at 7 PM. Perfect timing.

3

The luge has two tracks — 'Scenic' (slow, wide turns) and 'Advanced' (faster, banked corners). Start your kid on Scenic for the first run even if they beg for Advanced.

4

The buffet dinner at the Stratosfare Restaurant is pricey ($69 adult) but the view is unmatched. Book the 5:30 PM slot for the sunset window seat.

5

Bring a light jacket even in summer. The mountain top is 450m above Queenstown and the wind picks up in the late afternoon.

A Real Parent's Story

My 4-year-old beat me at the luge and hasn't stopped reminding me

She went down the Scenic track with her dad. I took the Advanced track. She still beat me because I spun out on a hairpin. Now she tells everyone 'Mummy crashed. I won.' Worth it.

We booked the gondola and luge combo expecting a nice family afternoon. What we got was a competition. Our 4-year-old was terrified on the gondola up — climbed into my lap. First luge run, she was hesitant. By the third run, she was passing people. I took the Advanced track, spun out on the last corner, and she finished before me. She still brings it up at dinner. 'Remember when you crashed, Mummy?' Yes. I remember.
