Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Entry is only €5 for adults and €3 for kids. It's one of the cheapest zoo days in Europe — worth visiting even for an hour.

2

Combine with a stroll through Maksimir Park afterward. The park has five lakes, a huge playground, and duck-feeding areas.

3

The red panda enclosure is the star attraction. Go in the morning when the keeper feeds them at 10:30.

4

Bring cash. The ticket booth doesn't accept cards and the nearest ATM is a 10-minute walk.

5

Skip the aviary if your toddler is scared of birds flying close — it's a walkthrough and birds perch within arm's reach.

6

The zoo restaurant is average. Better to pack a picnic and eat on the lake shore in Maksimir Park.

A Real Parent's Story

The old-fashioned zoo that won us over

It's not Singapore Zoo. It's not San Diego. But watching my daughter's face as a peacock strolled past her (free-roaming!) was pure magic. Zagreb Zoo is charmingly unpretentious.

I grew up visiting Zagreb Zoo as a kid in the '90s. Coming back with my own daughter, I was worried it would feel outdated. But the recent renovations have been thoughtful — the snow leopard enclosure is genuinely beautiful with high rocks and greenery. And the free-roaming peacocks still wander the paths like they own the place. My daughter fed one breadcrumbs (yes, I know, not ideal — but she was so happy).
