Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Go early (7:30 AM opening). The animals are fed in the first hour and are most active. By 10 AM they are all napping.
The elephant ride ($3) is controversial but popular with local families. Decide what you are comfortable with before your kids see it and beg.
Bring small bills (kyat) for the entrance fee and snacks. The ATMs nearby are unreliable.
The butterfly house and aquarium within the zoo are extra ($1 each) but worth it for younger kids.
Combine with a Kandawgyi Lake walk and the Karaweik Palace replica — all right next to each other for a full morning out.

A Real Parent's Story
The cheapest day out in Southeast Asia
“Entry for a family of four cost less than $2. We spent more on parking. The zoo is old and worn but our kids didn't care — they saw a real elephant for the first time.”

We were in Yangon for 3 days and needed something to do. Yangon Zoo was the budget option. Entry was about 50 cents per person. The zoo is clearly old — some enclosures need updating — but our kids had never seen an elephant in real life. My 4-year-old stared at one for 20 minutes. She kept saying 'it's so big, Papa.' At that price, it's not a zoo visit, it's a bargain.
