Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Timed-entry passes are REQUIRED even though admission is free — book them on recreation.gov at least 2 weeks in advance for weekends.

2

The flight simulators ($9 per person) have a 38-inch height minimum — measure your kid before they queue for 45 minutes.

3

The 'How Things Fly' gallery is a hands-on paradise for school-age kids: wind tunnels, paper airplane launchers, and Bernoulli blowers.

4

Enter through the Mall entrance (Independence Ave) — the other entrance has a longer security line.

5

The museum is undergoing renovations through 2026 — check which galleries are open before visiting.

A Real Parent's Story

When a 7-year-old corrected the docent

My son memorized the entire Apollo 11 mission timeline from YouTube videos. At the museum, a docent said Apollo 11's computers had the power of a modern calculator. My son loudly announced it was less — 2.048 MHz with 36K of RAM. The docent paused, grinned, and said he was correct.

I was mortified at first — my kid correcting a professional in front of 20 people. But the docent was amazing. She made him her junior expert for the rest of the tour. He got to help explain the lunar module docking mechanism. Other parents were asking me how to get their kids that into space. Three years of Space Train YouTube videos on repeat. It pays off eventually.
