Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The recently renovated snow leopard habitat is the zoo's flagship exhibit. These elusive cats are most active in the morning when it is coolest.
The petting zoo has goats, rabbits, and a miniature pony. Feed bags cost 2,000 som ($0.20) and are a guaranteed toddler delight.
Pony rides cost 10,000 som ($1) for 10 minutes - one of the cheapest pony rides in any capital city worldwide.
Tashkent summers are extreme (40+ degrees C). Only visit before 11 AM or after 5 PM in July-August.
The aquarium section is modest but contains Central Asia's only collection of Caspian Sea fish species.
The zoo entrance fee is under $2 for adults and free for children under 7. Incredible value.
Combine with the nearby Tashkent Botanical Garden (entrance opposite) for a full nature day.

Tashkent Zoo is not flashy but it is honest. The enclosures are spacious if not luxurious, the animals look healthy and well-fed, and the grounds are beautifully green. Our kids spent an hour in the petting zoo feeding goats from their tiny hands. The snow leopards are stunning - we got lucky and they were pacing near the glass. Combine with a walk through the adjacent Botanical Garden and you have a wonderful, cheap family day out.
