Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Arrive by 4:45 PM to get a good spot for the 5 PM flag-lowering ceremony — it's short (10 min) but impressive.
Explain to kids beforehand that they cannot touch the monks or their robes — it's seen as disrespectful.
The wooden walkways creak loudly — tell kids it's the 'dragon footsteps' and watch their eyes light up.
Take the guided tour (free, in English) — the stories about the dzong's construction are better than any sign.
Visit on a weekday — weekends are quiet but the main halls may be closed.

A Real Parent's Story
The flag that refused to come down
“The wind caught the giant flag during the lowering ceremony and it took four monks to wrestle it down. My kids thought it was a dragon fight.”
We arrived for the evening flag ceremony thinking it would be a quiet, meditative experience. The flag — which is enormous — got caught by a sudden gust of wind. The monks holding the ropes were literally lifted off their feet for a second. Four of them had to work together to wrestle it down. My kids were completely convinced they were watching a battle with a sky dragon. The monks were laughing about it afterward. Best accidental entertainment ever.
