Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Bring swim nappies and a towel - the water play zone is irresistible and your kid will be soaked within 3 minutes.

2

Go on a weekday afternoon. Weekends are packed with birthday parties taking over half the space.

3

Pack a picnic lunch. The surrounding Darling Harbour restaurants are overpriced and the queues are 20-plus minutes at lunch.

4

The giant nest swing near the cafe is the most popular spot - go during the 2:30 PM lull when toddlers are napping.

5

Combine with a visit to the Chinese Garden of Friendship (next door) for a quiet cool-down after playtime.

A Real Parent's Story

Two hours of pure, free joy in the middle of the city

We spent two hours at Darling Quarter Playground and spent exactly zero dollars. My 2-year-old and 5-year-old were equally obsessed. I sat on a bench with a coffee watching the harbour. This is what family travel should be.

We had been in Sydney for 4 days blowing money on tourist attractions. On day 5 I told my wife we needed a budget day. She found Darling Quarter Playground online. Best decision of the trip. The kids did not care that it was free - they had more fun here than at the zoo. The net climb is genuinely impressive, the water zone kept my toddler cool, and the harbour views are the best in Sydney. We grabbed fish and chips from the nearby market and had a picnic. Total cost $18. Total joy infinite.
