Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The elephant show at 10:30 AM is the zoo's signature experience. Arrive at 8:30 AM opening, see the main enclosures, then catch the show.
The walk-in aviary is spectacular - hundreds of tropical birds fly freely. Buy a feed stick (LKR 50) and small birds will land on your child's hand.
The butterfly garden is one of the best in Asia with 30+ species fluttering in a screened tropical garden. Early morning is best for activity.
The zoo is huge. Hire a mini-train ride or a bicycle rickshaw (LKR 200) if your kids get tired.
The Sri Lankan leopard enclosure has been recently upgraded with a glass viewing wall - get eye-level with these beautiful cats.
Visit on weekdays to avoid school groups. The zoo is packed on weekends and public holidays.
Boat rides on the lake (LKR 100 per person, 15 min) offer a different perspective of the zoo with bird island views.
The zoo's location in Dehiwala is 20 minutes from central Colombo. A tuk-tuk from Galle Face costs around LKR 800.

A Real Parent's Story
The elephant show left our daughter speechless
“A 50-year-old elephant named Kadira painted a picture with a brush held in her trunk, then bowed to the crowd. Our 5-year-old whispered 'That's real?' 15 times in a row.”

Colombo Zoo is genuinely impressive for its size. The elephant show is ethically managed - no chairs or circus tricks, just natural behaviours demonstrated with positive reinforcement. Kadira the elephant paints, plays a harmonica, and picks up objects with her trunk. Our kids were mesmerised. The butterfly garden was equally magical - a blue Mormon landed on my daughter's shoulder and stayed for 5 minutes. This zoo rivals many in developed countries.
