Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Skip the Ten Courts of Hell if your child is under 7 or easily scared. The depictions of hell punishments are graphic — think impalement and boiling oil. Wait until they are older.

2

Go with a guide or download the audio tour app. The statues have wild stories behind them, and exploring without context is just 'look, a statue of a man with 10 heads.'

3

Combine with nearby Labrador Park for a playground and seaside walk. The park is 10 minutes away by bus.

4

Bring water. The park is open-air tropical and there's limited shade near the main courtyard.

5

The Dragon Garden with the giant green serpent is the best photo spot. Line your kids up for a group shot on the dragon's tail.

A Real Parent's Story

The 10 Courts of Hell conversation I wasn't ready for

'Mama, why is that lady being cut in half?' I'd forgotten this was a theme park about the afterlife. We learned a lot about theology that day — and about toddler limits.

I'd read about Haw Par Villa being 'quirky' and 'colorful.' Nobody mentioned it's basically a Chinese hell museum with parking. My 6-year-old was fascinated and horrified in equal measure. The mountain monkeys getting boiled in oil sparked a 20-minute discussion about heaven and hell that I was absolutely not prepared for at 2 PM on a Saturday. Would go again? Absolutely. Just maybe not with a preschooler.
