Why Families Love Yu Garden
Yu Garden is a 400-year-old Ming Dynasty garden in Shanghai Old City with rockeries, pavilions, and koi ponds. The compact 2-hectare size lets you see everything in 60-90 minutes before kids lose interest. The adjacent Yuyuan Bazaar is a covered shopping street with snacks, toys, and the famous Nanxiang Steamed Bun restaurant. The zigzag bridge over the pond to the teahouse is a must-photo moment kids enjoy.

A Real Parent's Story
The Koi Pond That Held Two Kids Spellbound
“One specific fish held both my kids silent for almost 30 minutes -- we named him Spot.”
We nearly skipped Yu Garden. The moment we entered through the dragon-head gate, my kids spotted the koi pond. One enormous orange-and-white koi with a black patch over one eye seemed to perform for them. We bought fish food for 2 RMB and spent 30 minutes watching. The garden is beautiful with the Exquisite Jade Rock and carved dragon pillars. Afterward we wandered through the bazaar for xiaolongbao and the kids each picked a 10 RMB toy. Perfect morning.
