Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Book a private glass-bottom boat for your family ($150-200 for 4 hours). Group tours pack 20+ people and feel rushed.

2

The best snorkeling is at Ile Moyenne (Round Island). The current is gentle and there are massive parrotfish and turtles.

3

Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreen damages coral and the guides are strict about enforcing this.

4

For toddlers (2-5), ask about the glass-bottom option. They'll see everything without getting in the water.

5

Pack seasickness meds for kids. The crossing from Mahé can get choppy, especially in July-August.

A Real Parent's Story

My 4-year-old snorkeled with a sea turtle

I put a life jacket and mask on my 4-year-old, held her hand, and pointed down. A massive green sea turtle was swimming right below us. She put her face in the water and screamed with joy. Inhaled a little seawater. Worth it.

I was nervous taking a 4-year-old snorkeling. But the guides were patient and the water at Ile Moyenne is like a bathtub -- warm, shallow, calm. They gave her a toddler-sized life jacket that kept her perfectly buoyant. The turtle swam right under her. The boat crew had fruit and cold drinks ready. My wife and I got to snorkel in shifts. Perfect family day.

James, dad of 2 from London
