Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Skip the weekends -- it gets shoulder-to-shoulder with local families and the animal houses feel cramped.

2

Bring an umbrella stroller. The paths are wide but some sections have cracked pavement.

3

Feedings happen at 10 AM for the big cats and 2 PM for the primates. Time your visit around those.

4

Combine with the Museu Nacional next door -- free on Sundays, kids love the dinosaur skeletons.

5

The snack bars only take cash (Reais). No ATM inside, so grab money beforehand.

A Real Parent's Story

Toucan at arm's reach changed everything

A toucan hopped right up to the viewing glass, beak wide open. My 6-year-old pressed her hand against the glass, eye-to-eye with it. She whispered 'he's smiling at me.' That's Rio Zoo -- raw and real.

The zoo is old -- like, founding-era 1940s old. But that character is what makes it. The toucan enclosure puts you inches away from them. No fancy glass, just mesh. Our daughter stood frozen for 10 minutes while a toucan preened on the other side. It's not a high-tech zoo experience. It's better.
