Why Families Love Phnom Penh Zoo
Cambodia's largest zoo located 40km outside Phnom Penh. Home to elephants, lions, tigers, monkeys, and an array of native birds in sprawling grounds. While conditions are more basic than Western zoos, the close-up animal encounters and incredibly low prices (under $2 entry) make it a popular weekend destination for local families and adventurous tourists.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Hire a tuk-tuk for the day ($20-25 round trip with waiting). The zoo is 40km out of town and taxis are harder to find for the return.
Bring your own lunch. The on-site food stalls are limited and hygiene is questionable with small kids.
The monkey enclosure is the highlight — they are visible and active. Keep your bags zipped. They have learned to steal snacks.
Set expectations before you go. This is not Singapore Zoo. Some enclosures are basic. Frame it as an adventure, not a world-class attraction.
Combine with the nearby Koh Dach (Silk Island) ferry for a full day out from Phnom Penh.

A Real Parent's Story
A monkey stole my daughter's hair clip
“We were taking a family photo when a macaque jumped onto my shoulder, grabbed my daughter's glittery hair clip, and was gone in half a second. She cried for 10 minutes and then laughed about it for 3 days.”

We go to Phnom Penh Zoo every few months because it's cheap and my daughter loves animals. The monkeys are brazen. One jumped onto my husband's shoulder while we were posing for a photo, snatched the sparkly butterfly clip from our daughter's hair, and was up a tree before anyone could react. She was devastated for exactly 10 minutes. Then she saw a baby monkey and all was forgiven. We now leave all shiny things in the car.
