Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The Senjogahara boardwalk trail is 2.5km of flat wooden path — perfect for strollers and little legs. Takes about 1 hour with photo stops.
Skip the Kegon Falls elevator if you have a toddler who hates enclosed spaces. Instead view from the free observation area at the top (less crowded, better views).
Bring jackets even in summer. At 1,200m elevation, Lake Chuzenji is 8-10 degrees cooler than Nikko town.
Feed the ducks at Lake Chuzenji — there's a 100 yen pellet machine near the boat rental dock.
Pack a picnic. The upscale restaurant Chugushi Tei is the only lunch option near the lake and fills up by noon.

A Real Parent's Story
The boardwalk where she spotted her first wild monkey
“A Japanese macaque sat on the Senjogahara boardwalk grooming its baby. My 5-year-old froze, then whispered 'Mama, we're in a nature documentary.' We stayed 45 minutes watching that family.”

Nikko was our escape from Tokyo's crowds and it delivered exactly what we needed. The boardwalk is so flat my 3-year-old walked the entire 2.5km without being carried. My older one counted 7 different butterfly species. Kegon Falls is thunderously loud — bring ear defenders if your kid is noise-sensitive. We spent 5 hours in the park and could have easily spent more.
