Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Arrive before 10 AM to see the elephants being fed. It's the most interactive keeper talk of the day.

2

The splash park near the main lawn is a lifesaver on hot days — bring swimmers and a towel even if you don't plan on water play.

3

Buy a family membership ($130/year) if you're in Melbourne for more than 3 days. It pays for itself after one visit and you get discounts at other zoos nationwide.

4

Download the zoo map before you go. Phone signal is patchy inside the grounds and paper maps run out by noon.

5

The Butterfly House is tiny and gets crowded. Go at 2 PM when school groups have left for the best experience.

A Real Parent's Story

The orangutan looked right at my son and held his hand through the glass

A 20-year-old orangutan pressed her hand against the glass where our 4-year-old's hand was. They sat like that for almost a minute. Neither of us spoke. We couldn't. I still cry thinking about it.

We were visiting family in Melbourne and decided to do the zoo. The orangutan sanctuary is incredible — it's a massive open space with tall climbing structures. One of the females came right up to the glass, sat down, and pressed her hand against our son's. He was frozen. She looked at him, then at us, then slowly moved away. The keeper said she'd never done that before. Some moments you just can't plan.
