Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

The stairs inside are VERY steep (60-degree angles). Kids under 5 may need to be carried. Consider a baby carrier — strollers must be left at the entrance.

2

Rent the English audio guide (300 yen) — it has a kid-friendly mode with shorter explanations and sound effects.

3

The view from the top floor is worth the climb. On clear days you can see the Japanese Alps.

4

Arrive right at 8:30 AM opening — the castle is much less crowded and the morning light is perfect for photos.

5

The grounds are free and open before the castle opens. Let kids run wild on the grass before tackling the interior.

A Real Parent's Story

He climbed a 400-year-old castle like a mountain

My 6-year-old counted every step to the top. 231 steps. He was proud of himself at each floor. The samurai armor displays on the 3rd floor stopped him in his tracks — he stood there imagining battles.

Matsumoto Castle is the real deal. No reconstructions, no elevators, no gimmicks. The original wooden pillars still have axe marks from 400 years ago. My son loved the 'moon-viewing platform' on the 4th floor. The staff gave him a sticker for making it to the top. We spent 2 hours inside, then another hour playing on the lawns.
