Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

The hike is steep — allow 20-30 minutes uphill with kids, and bring water and snacks for a break at the top.

2

Don't bring food into the monkey area — buy the official feeding pellets (100 yen) at the hut. Monkeys will grab visible snacks.

3

Visit the bamboo grove on the way back — it's 10 minutes downhill and much less crowded in the early mornings.

A Real Parent's Story

My 5-year-old climbed a mountain to feed monkeys and loved every step

The hike was tough for little legs but the payoff was real: monkeys eating from my son's hand through a safety screen.

I was worried about the hike with a 5-year-old, but she treated it like an adventure. The path is well-maintained, and there are benches every few minutes. At the top, the monkeys are everywhere — grooming each other, playing with babies, sitting on the shrine. The feeding hut is genius: kids slide pellets through wire mesh while monkeys take them gently from the other side. My daughter screamed with delight. The view of Kyoto from the top is worth the climb alone.
