Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The children’s railway runs every 30 minutes (10 UAH) — a mini steam train that circles the zoo perimeter. Kids 2-8 go absolutely crazy for it.
Check the zoo’s Telegram channel before visiting — some sections occasionally close due to air raid situations. The aquarium is always open.
The polar bear pool has underwater viewing — your kids can see them swimming directly overhead.
Bring your own food. The zoo cafes are basic and the nearby Shevchenko Park has much better options for a picnic.
The zoo is undergoing gradual renovation (some old Soviet-era enclosures remain), head to the ‘New Zoo’ section first for the best habitats.

A Real Parent's Story
The polar bear swam right toward us
“Through the underwater glass, a massive polar bear swam directly toward my daughter. She screamed, then laughed, then pressed her face against the glass. The bear did a somersault. They were playing. I almost cried.”

Kyiv Zoo has a complicated history — some areas are worn, some are being rebuilt. But the animals that have modern enclosures are clearly well cared for. The elephant house is new and spacious. The aquarium has a beautiful tunnel with rays and sharks. My kids loved the pony rides (50 UAH for a 5-min circuit). It’s a zoo in transition, getting better every year.
