Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Drive through the herbivore zone first. Deer and zebras will walk right up to your car and kids can feed them through the window. Bring carrots cut into strips.

2

The Yunnan golden monkey exhibit is the star. They are endemic to this region and much more colorful than their Sichuan cousins.

3

Skip the zoo food. The area around Jindian has excellent street food. Try the 'crossing-the-bridge noodles' after your visit.

4

Kunming sits at 1,900 meters elevation. You and the kids might get winded walking the hills. Take it slow and bring water.

5

Combine with the Jindian (Golden Temple) complex nearby. It is a stunning Taoist temple with copper buildings and century-old pine trees.

A Real Parent's Story

A deer ate my map right out of my hand

I was checking directions when a deer walked up and calmly ate the map. My daughter laughed so hard she dropped her ice cream. The deer ate that too.

The drive-through zone is wonderfully chaotic. Deer and zebras just walk up to cars with zero fear. I was looking at the park map and a deer grabbed it right out of my hand and started chewing. Then my daughter's ice cream fell and another deer appeared like magic. We spent 20 minutes laughing in the car while deer walked around us like we were part of their world. My kids still ask if we can go back to see the map-eating deer.
