Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Hire a private boat for the day (PHP 3-5 million for a family) — you control the pace, leave when kids are tired, and avoid the crowded group tour schedules.
Rinca Island is better for families than Komodo Island — the trek is shorter, flatter, and dragons are more visible (and active!).
Book a ranger named Budi or Aris from the Rinca office. They are incredible with kids — patient, educational, and know exactly where the dragons hide.
Keep kids strictly BETWEEN adults during the trek. Dragons can sprint 20km/h and the ranger's stick is the only real protection.
The Pink Beach snorkeling is the best in Indonesia for kids — shallow, calm, and so many fish they'll think it's an aquarium.
Bring more water than you think you need. The islands are dry and hot. 2 liters per person minimum.
Pack snacks. The food options on the islands are basic noodles and rice — fine for adults but picky kids will struggle.
Fly to Labuan Bajo at least one day before the tour. Morning flights are delayed 50% of the time.

A Real Parent's Story
We taught our kids about respect, not fear
“Seeing a 3-meter dragon in the wild is humbling. Our ranger taught the kids about respecting wildlife, not being afraid of it. My 9-year-old said it was 'better than Jurassic Park.'”

Komodo National Park was the most intense family adventure we've done. The ranger briefing before the trek was serious — stay behind the ranger, no sudden moves, don't run. But the ranger made it fun for kids, showing them dragon footprints, telling them how they hunt, teaching them to read the ground for signs. We saw 7 dragons on Rinca, including a massive 2.5m male. Pink Beach snorkeling was the perfect cool-down after the adrenaline.
