Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Temper expectations — this is not a modern zoo. It is rustic and real. That is the appeal.

2

Bring plenty of water and snacks — on-site food options are limited and unreliable.

3

The Cuban crocodile exhibit is the highlight — these are a critically endangered endemic species.

4

Cash only (CUP) — cards are not accepted anywhere.

5

The zoo is far from central Havana — negotiate a taxi fare in advance and ask them to wait.

A Real Parent's Story

Cuban crocodiles up close

The Cuban crocodile enclosure was basic but the crocs were enormous and active. One swam right up to the glass and my 5-year-old came face-to-face with a 10-foot predator. She asked if it could eat the cat.

I wanted my daughter to see Cuban crocodiles — they are only found in the Zapata Swamp and this zoo. The conditions are not fancy but the animals seem well-cared for and the keepers clearly love them. The keeper let my daughter help toss food to the crocodiles. She still talks about feeding a crocodile.
