Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Arrive at 7 AM sharp to catch the morning boat safari (1 hour). After 8:30 the birds quiet down and the heat picks up.

2

The boardwalk trail is 1.5 km and stroller-friendly. Skip the boat if your kid gets seasick — the boardwalk is equally good for bird spotting.

3

Combine with a visit to Old Goa churches (15-minute drive) for a perfect half-day that breaks up the beach routine.

4

Binoculars are provided on the boat tour. But if you have your own, bring them — the provided ones are basic and hard for small hands to focus.

5

The sanctuary closes for monsoon (June-September). Check the DFF Goa website before planning your trip.

A Real Parent's Story

We saw eagles fishing and my son declared himself a bird expert

A Brahminy kite swooped down and caught a fish right in front of our boat. My 5-year-old announced 'I am now a bird expert, Mama.' He spent the rest of the trip identifying 'eagles' (every bird larger than a pigeon).

We came to Goa for the beaches but Salim Ali Sanctuary was our surprise highlight. It’s small enough that kids don’t get tired, but packed with wildlife. The boat ride through the mangroves is peaceful and the guide was great with children — he showed them how to mimic bird calls. A perfect morning away from the sun loungers.
