Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Hire a guide at the entrance (300 BDT) — the stories about the fort's three unfinished tombs are fascinating and the guide keeps kids engaged.

2

Visit on a Friday morning — it's less crowded and the gardens are at their best after the weekly maintenance.

3

Bring a hat and umbrella — the fort has very little shade and Dhaka sun is relentless.

4

Pack snacks — the nearby street food is delicious but may upset sensitive stomachs.

5

Combine with a rickshaw ride through Old Dhaka — kids love the chaotic, colorful streets.

A Real Parent's Story

The unfinished fort and the princess ghost story

Our guide told my daughter the legend of Pari Bibi, the princess buried in the fort. She still asks if we can visit her ghost friend.

The guide noticed our 7-year-old was getting bored after 10 minutes of Mughal history. So he switched tactics and told her the story of Pari Bibi, the Mughal princess who died tragically young and is buried in the fort's mausoleum. He whispered that her spirit still visits the gardens at night. Our daughter was absolutely captivated. For the rest of the trip, she asked if we could go back to 'visit the princess ghost.' Now every time she hears the word 'Bangladesh,' she asks about Pari Bibi.
