Why Families Love Cretaquarium
The largest aquarium in the Mediterranean, home to over 2,500 marine creatures from 200 species across 60 tanks. Housed in a former NATO base, this modern facility features a massive 14-meter transparent tunnel where sharks, rays, and groupers swim overhead. Touch pools with starfish and sea cucumbers make it a hands-on experience for little ones.

Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
Buy tickets online — the queue can be 30 minutes in July-August. Skip-the-line option is €2 extra and worth it.
The feeding shows at 11:00 AM (sharks) and 12:30 PM (penguins) are the highlights. Plan your visit around these.
Combine with a morning at the nearby beach (Gouves Beach is 5 minutes away) for a perfect day split.
The touch pool opens at 10:30. Go straight there first — within an hour the water gets cloudy and the animals get handled too much.
There's a small outdoor playground near the cafeteria. Use it as a break point when kids hit the 90-minute mark.
The penguin exhibit has a special low-level viewing window perfect for toddlers and strollers.

A Real Parent's Story
She touched a shark and didn't scream
“In the touch pool, a small catshark swam right over our 4-year-old's hand. She went completely still, eyes wide. Then she whispered 'it's like wet velvet.' I cried a little.”

My daughter has been terrified of sharks since watching Finding Nemo. I wasn't sure how she'd handle Cretaquarium. But the touch pool attendant was incredible — gently explaining that catsharks are like 'ocean puppies.' She showed us how to let the shark swim over our hands. My daughter tried it and was amazed. We bought her a stuffed shark at the gift shop. She sleeps with it every night now.
