Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Do the Skyrail up and the train back — not the other way. Skyrail in the morning has clearer views and the train back is thrilling coming down the mountain switchbacks.

2

Buy the combined ticket online ($89 adult, $45 child) — it's 15% cheaper than buying separately at the terminals.

3

Get off at the Skyrail Red Peak mid-station. The 10-minute boardwalk through the ancient rainforest has a ranger talk at 10:30 AM that kids actually enjoy.

4

Kuranda Village markets open at 9:30 AM. The best Aboriginal art stalls are near the train station, not the main market area.

5

Bring a light jacket even in summer. The mountain is 350m higher than Cairns and drops 5-7C. Toddlers get cold in the open train carriages.

A Real Parent's Story

The train whistle scared her, then she waved at every single hiker

Our 3-year-old was terrified of the train whistle at first. By the second tunnel she was waving at every bushwalker we passed. The Skyrail was magical — she pressed her face against the glass for 30 minutes without a word.

We came to Cairns specifically for this experience and it exceeded every expectation. The Skyrail gondola was the highlight — our 3-year-old normally won't sit still for 5 minutes but she was glued to the window for the full 30 minutes. 'Mama, the trees are flat!' The train ride down was bumpy and fun. We ate ice cream in Kuranda and bought boomerangs at the market. A perfect day.
