Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

Buy timed-entry tickets online at least 3 days ahead — weekend walk-ups regularly sell out by noon.

2

The 'Animal Spotlights' talks at 10:30am and 2pm are free with admission and offer close-up views you can't get otherwise.

3

Pack a layer — the polar play zone is kept at a chilly 46°F and toddlers feel it fast.

4

Free admission days (Illinois residents only, typically Wednesdays in January/February) are packed — avoid unless budget is tight.

5

The stroller parking near the main dolphin tank fills early — arrive before 9:45am or plan to babywear.

A Real Parent's Story

Beluga whisperer for a day

Our 5-year-old has been obsessed with beluga whales since she saw a documentary. When the trainer brought Kayla the beluga right up to the glass during the morning talk, she pressed her tiny hand against the pane. Kayla mirrored her. They held hands through the glass for a full minute.

We drove 3 hours just for the aquarium — our daughter's choice. She has been drawing belugas since she was 3. The morning trainer talk at the Abbott Oceanarium was incredible. The trainer signaled, and Kayla swam right over and pressed her melon against the glass. Without being told, our daughter pressed her palm up. They stayed that way for maybe 60 seconds. Every kid in the audience went quiet. I'm not ashamed to say I cried.
