Tips & Tricks from Real Parents
The penguin feeding at 10:30 AM is a must-see. The underwater viewing window lets kids see them swimming at eye level.
The zoo is huge (over 70 hectares). Rent a pedal cart for 15 RON/hour — kids love driving and parents save their feet.
Combine with the Baneasa Forest park for a full day. There are bike paths, paddle boats, and horse carriages.
The restaurant is decent with Romanian kids' classics like mititei (grilled sausages). Portions are generous.
Bring mosquito repellent in summer. The forest location means more bugs than central Bucharest.
Weekday mornings are blissfully quiet. On weekends it gets busy with local families by 11 AM.

A Real Parent's Story
The penguin that stole the show
“Our 5-year-old spent 20 minutes pressed against the underwater window watching penguins zoom past. He made up names for each one. The penguin feeding is worth the trip alone.”

I was hesitant about Bucharest Zoo because I remember it from 20 years ago — concrete cages and sad animals. It's completely transformed now. The penguin enclosure is genuinely world-class with a 8-meter underwater viewing area. We spent so long there we almost missed the rhinos. The giraffe house is new too. My son said 'best day ever' unprompted. High praise from a picky 5-year-old.
