A Real Parent's Story
Myrtle the turtle outlived my patience
“Myrtle, a 500-pound green sea turtle, has lived at the aquarium since 1970 — that is 50+ years. My 4-year-old stood at the bottom of the Giant Ocean Tank saying hi Myrtle over and over for 35 straight minutes. Myrtle kept circling back. I timed it. The turtle was more patient than I was.”

I have been coming to this aquarium since I was a kid. Myrtle was here then too. Watching my youngest have the same mesmerized reaction I did three decades ago was surreal. She named Myrtle as her best friend. For weeks after, every bath time was swimming with Myrtle. The aquarium volunteer said Myrtle recognizes patterns and swims toward kids who wave consistently. So maybe it was real.
