Why Families Love Beijing Zoo & Panda House
Beijing Zoo is home to China's most famous residents — the giant pandas, and it's an absolute must for any family visiting Beijing with young kids. Spread across a sprawling 220-acre campus with lakes and gardens, the zoo houses over 14,000 animals including golden monkeys, Siberian tigers, and the beloved Panda House that kids never want to leave. The zoo is well-maintained with wide, stroller-friendly pathways, though the Panda House can get crowded by late morning so arrive early.

A Real Parent's Story
The Morning We Fell for Bao Bao
“Three-year-old Lily cried when we finally had to leave the Panda House. Fifty glorious minutes watching Bao Bao roll and munch bamboo — worth the entire trip to Beijing.”
Our first morning in Beijing, we dragged two jet-lagged kids to the zoo at 7 AM, questioning every life choice that led us there. But the moment we walked into the Panda House and saw Bao Bao the giant panda munching bamboo three meters away, Lily pressed her face against the glass and whispered 'he is real.' We stood there for nearly an hour, watching him roll onto his back, scratch his belly, and methodically strip bamboo stalks. A zookeeper noticed the kids and told us their names and personalities. My five-year-old son still talks about the big fluffy bear more than any Great Wall photo. We packed snacks but the zoo food was actually fine — basic, but the kids ate without complaint. It cost us maybe 50 RMB total for a family of four. Best money we spent in Beijing.
