Tips & Tricks from Real Parents

1

The penguin encounter at 11 AM is the highlight. Book online for the 'Penguin VIP' add-on ($20) — kids get to feed a king penguin and it's worth every cent.

2

Walk the tunnel at least twice. First time just look up. Second time look at each side — the rays hide against the sand and kids love spotting them.

3

The Antarctic snow room is cold but only lasts 5 minutes. It's a nice photo op but don't queue longer than 15 minutes for it.

4

Free parking is limited and fills by 10:30 AM. The bus from downtown stops right outside — easier than driving.

5

Combine with the nearby Mission Bay beach playground (5 min drive). Kids can burn off energy after the aquarium.

A Real Parent's Story

The shark swam directly above my son and he went completely silent

A 3-metre tiger shark glided over our heads in the tunnel. My 5-year-old went silent, grabbed my hand, and just stared. He didn't speak for a full minute. Then he whispered 'I want to be a shark.'

We've been to Christchurch aquarium but Kelly Tarlton's is different. The tunnel is longer and the sharks are bigger. Our son has always been a bit afraid of sharks — Jaws ruined it for him. But when the tiger shark swam right over us in the tunnel, he didn't flinch. He just held my hand and watched. When we came out he said he wanted to be a marine biologist. Kids change in the strangest moments.

Hannah, mom of 1 from Christchurch
