Lombok with Kids: Bali's Quieter Neighbor

Lombok sits just east of Bali, visible across the Lombok Strait. It's often called "Bali 20 years ago" — less developed, more authentic, and significantly quieter. For families wanting a beach holiday without Bali's traffic and crowds, Lombok is the answer.

Best Beaches for Families

Senggigi Beach — The main tourist strip with calm waters and good swimming. The beach slopes gently — no sudden drop-offs. Beachfront restaurants serve everything from grilled fish to pizza. Sunsets here are spectacular. Kuta Lombok (not Bali Kuta) — A stunning crescent of white sand with turquoise water. Unlike Bali's Kuta, this one is quiet and family-focused. The waves are gentle near the shore. The nearby Mandalika resort area has excellent family-friendly hotels. Tanjung Aan Beach — Powdery white sand with crystal-clear water. The water is shallow for 30+ meters, making it the safest beach for toddlers in Lombok. Two small hills bookend the beach — the 10-minute climb up the southern hill offers breathtaking views of the bay. Mawun Beach — A perfect horseshoe bay surrounded by hills. The water is so calm it looks like a lake. There's one restaurant (fresh grilled fish $3-5). No vendors, no jet skis, just pure beach.

The Gili Islands with Kids

The three Gili Islands (Air, Meno, Trawangan) are a 30-minute fast boat ride from Bali or Lombok. Each has a different vibe:

Gili Air — Best for families. Relaxed, no cars (just bicycles and horse carts), calm swimming on the east side. Accommodations range from $30/night bungalows to $150/night resorts. The snorkeling off the east beach is excellent — sea turtles are almost guaranteed. Gili Meno — The quietest and smallest. Best for families who want true seclusion. The water between Gili Air and Gili Meno has the best coral and sea turtle sightings. Gili Trawangan — The party island. Skip with young kids unless staying at a resort on the quieter east side. Boat tips: The fast boat from Bali ($35-50/person) can be rough — motion sickness bands are recommended. From Lombok, the public ferry ($3/person, 30 minutes) is slower but calmer.

Waterfalls

Lombok has dozens of waterfalls, many with kid-safe pools at the base.

Sendang Gile Waterfall — A 30-minute walk from the parking area through rice paddies and forest. The path is well-maintained and stroller-friendly in parts. The waterfall drops into a deep pool — older kids can swim. Entry $2/adult. Tiu Kelep Waterfall — Continue another 15 minutes from Sendang Gile through a beautiful forest trail. The waterfall is taller and the pool is wider. Best for ages 5+ (the final approach requires walking through shallow water). Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu — Twin waterfalls near each other. Stokel has a single powerful cascade; Kelambu has a curtain-like flow. Both have shallow pools perfect for wading. Entry $2/adult.

Where to Stay

Senggigi Area:

- Qunci Villas ($80-150/night) — Family-friendly with a kids' pool, daily activities, and a serene beachfront. The restaurant has a dedicated kids' menu. Book on Booking.com.

- Sheraton Senggigi ($100-180/night) — Large resort with a dedicated kids' club, multiple pools, and direct beach access.

Kuta Mandalika Area:

- Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika ($80-120/night) — Modern resort with a kids' pool, water slides, and family suites. Newly built with great facilities.

- Novotel Lombok ($60-90/night) — Reliable family option with kids' club, playground, and spacious rooms.

Gili Air:

- Hotel Gili Air ($40-80/night) — Direct beach access, pool, and the owner's children offer free sandcastle-building lessons.

Where to Eat

Asmara Restaurant (Senggigi) — Indonesian and Western food on the beach. The nasi goreng ($2.50) is the best in town. Kids' menu available. El Bazar Cafe (Senggigi) — Middle Eastern and Italian food. The hummus and pita ($3) is perfect for picky eaters. Free WiFi. Scallywags (Gili Air) — Beachfront seafood restaurant. Kids can watch fish in the water below the jetty while parents eat. Grilled fish starts at $5.

Getting Around

Rent a car ($20-30/day) — Lombok is easy to drive with well-maintained roads on the west coast. The airport (LOP) has car rental counters at arrivals. Otherwise, hire a driver ($30-40/day) who knows the routes to the waterfalls.

The Verdict

Lombok is the right choice for families who want beautiful beaches, clear water, and genuine Indonesian culture without the traffic and crowds of Bali. The Gili Islands (especially Gili Air) are perfect for 2-3 nights of island living. Four to five days total in Lombok gives you a relaxed, memorable trip.
