Bohol with Kids: The Perfect Philippine Island
Bohol is the most family-friendly island in the Philippines. It's compact (you can see the highlights in 3 days), the people are wonderfully warm toward children, and the attractions are genuinely kid-pleasing — chocolate hills, tiny tarsiers, river cruises, and calm beaches.
The Chocolate Hills
Bohol's most famous attraction — 1,268 perfectly symmetrical cone-shaped hills spread across 50 square kilometers. During the dry season (March-May), the grass turns brown, giving them their chocolate-like appearance.
The viewing experience: The main viewing platform (Chocolate Hills Complex) has a 214-step staircase. It's a workout but worth it. The view from the top is breathtaking — hills stretching to the horizon in every direction. Better option for families: The Sagbayan Peak viewing platform has a shorter climb and includes a butterfly dome, flower garden, and playground. Entry is 50 PHP ($0.90) per person. Kids can run around while parents take photos. Best time: Early morning (8-9am) before the heat. The light is golden and the hills cast dramatic shadows. Age: All ages. The steps are manageable with a toddler carrier. The Tarsiers
Tarsiers are among the world's smallest primates — they fit in the palm of your hand and have eyes as big as their brains. Kids are mesmerized.
Where to see them: The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is the ethical option. A 15-minute guided walk through native forest leads to viewing areas where tarsiers cling to branches, blinking their enormous eyes. Rules: No flash photography. No loud noises. No touching. Tarsiers are stress-sensitive — the sanctuary limits group sizes. Cost: 100 PHP ($1.80) per person. Age: Best for ages 3+. The short walk is easy. Why not the Loboc Tarsier Conservation Area? It's more commercial and the tarsiers are in smaller enclosures. The Corella sanctuary is more authentic and less crowded.Loboc River Cruise
A 45-minute boat ride along the Loboc River, flanked by coconut palms and jungle. Lunch is served on the boat (buffet-style Filipino food — grilled chicken, pork, vegetables, rice). A singer performs live music. The highlight: the boats stop at a small floating platform where local children dance traditional Filipino dances.
Cost: 500 PHP ($9) per person including lunch. Kids under 3 free. Best for ages: All ages. Toddlers love the boat ride and the music. The buffet includes fried chicken — always a win with kids. Tip: Book the 11am departure for the lunch cruise. The 2pm cruise can be hot.Alona Beach (Panglao Island)
Bohol's main beach area is on Panglao Island, connected by bridges to mainland Bohol. Alona Beach is a 1.5km stretch of white sand with calm waters, restaurants, and resorts.
The water is shallow for 20-30 meters — safe for toddlers. Sunbeds are free with drink purchase ($2-3). The sunset is beautiful. Alternate beach: Dumaluan Beach (10 minutes north of Alona) is quieter with softer sand. Fewer restaurants but more peace.Family-Friendly Activities on Panglao
Hinagdanan Cave — An underground cave with a natural pool that's safe for swimming. The cave entrance is a walk down steep steps (not stroller-friendly). The stalactite formations and the blue-green pool are beautiful. Entry 50 PHP ($0.90). Dolphin Watching in Pamilacan — A 30-minute boat ride from Alona Beach. Dolphins are spotted most mornings (80-90% success rate November-May). The tour also stops at Pamilacan Island for snorkeling. Cost: Shared tour $20/person, private $80-100/boat. 6am departure. Best for ages: 4+ (the early wake-up is the challenge, not the experience).Where to Stay
Budget:- Amorita Resort ($100-150/night) — Boutique resort on the cliffs near Alona Beach. Small but excellent pool, beautiful grounds, and family rooms. The restaurant is one of the best on Panglao.
Mid-Range:- Henann Resort Alona Beach ($120-200/night) — Large resort with multiple pools (including a dedicated kids' pool), direct beach access, and a great breakfast buffet. The kids' club runs activities 9am-5pm.
- Bohol Beach Club ($130-180/night) — On Dumaluan Beach (quieter than Alona). Family rooms, kids' menus, and a beautiful shaded lawn where kids can play.
Splurge:- Eskaya Beach Resort ($200-350/night) — Luxury villas with private pools. Stunning beachfront and excellent service. The uphill location gives panoramic sea views.
Where to Eat
Mist (Alona Beach) — Rooftop restaurant with Mediterranean-Asian fusion. The grilled fish ($6) and pizza ($5) are excellent. Sunset views. The Buzz Cafe (Alona Beach) — Calm, family-friendly cafe with coffee, sandwiches ($3-4), and desserts. The key lime pie is the best in Bohol. Gerarda's (Tagbilaran City) — Traditional Filipino cuisine in a heritage house. The chicken hamonado ($4) and callos ($4) are mild and kid-friendly. The owner's family history makes the meal special.Getting Around
Rent a car with a driver ($30-40/day) — the best way to see Bohol's sights spread across the island. Book through your hotel. Alternatively, hire a tricycle (three-wheeled motorcycle with sidecar) for shorter trips ($2-5).
Sample 3-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Tagbilaran, transfer to Panglao. Afternoon at Alona Beach. Day 2: Morning dolphin watching. Afternoon at Hinagdanan Cave. Sunset at Alona. Day 3: Check out, Bodhisattva tour: Chocolate Hills → Tarsier Sanctuary → Loboc River Cruise → depart. The Verdict
Bohol is the easiest Philippine destination for families with young kids. It's compact, safe, and the attractions are genuinely kid-friendly. Three days is perfect. The Chocolate Hills alone are worth the trip — there's nothing else like them in Asia.
